About The Quote Desk
The Quote Desk is a small collection of lines worth keeping. Each post takes a single quotation – from a book, a poem, a film or a philosopher – and tells the story behind it: who said it, where it comes from, and what it still means.
There is no shortage of quote pages on the internet. Most of them are a picture and a name, and many of them are simply wrong. This site is built on the opposite idea: that a line is worth keeping only if you know where it came from.
What you will find here
Every post follows the same shape. It opens with the line itself, stated plainly. Then it asks why the line works, where in the author’s work it sits, and why it still holds up today. A card carries the quotation for anyone who wants to keep it, and a credit names the photograph behind the card.
How the quotes are checked
Attribution comes first. Before a line is published it is checked against its real source – the book, the play, the speech – or, where that is not possible, against a record strong enough to say so. Where a wording is disputed between sources, that is noted rather than hidden. A confidently wrong attribution is worse than no post at all, and this site exists to avoid exactly that.
Who is behind it
I am Hitesh. I read a great deal – crime and mystery above all, but philosophy, history and fiction just as happily – and I write about what I read. The Quote Desk began as the place where the best line from each book could live on its own, separate from a review, with its context intact.
If you would like the longer version of my reading, my reviews live on Goodreads.
