Discipline Over Feeling - Andrew Raymond

Discipline is doing the work, even when you don’t feel like it. Andrew Raymond, The Shortlist

Why discipline is not motivation

The sentence separates two things that are usually treated as one. Motivation is a feeling, and it keeps its own schedule. Discipline is what is left when the feeling has not turned up. Confusing them is why a person can be told, and can believe, that they lack willpower on a day when all they actually lacked was the mood.

The test the line offers is unusually clean. Work done on a day you did not want to do it is the only work that was ever discipline; effort that felt easy was never the thing being tested. That reframes a flat afternoon as ordinary rather than as a verdict, because nothing in the plan depended on wanting to start.

Where the line comes from

Andrew Raymond is a Scottish crime novelist, raised in Paisley and based in Glasgow, who worked as a bookseller and later as a commercial manager at Waterstones before writing full time. The Shortlist is the second of his DCI Lomond novels, published in 2023 after The Bonnie Dead, and chosen for the Richard & Judy Book Club in 2025.

The story turns on the murder of the crime novelist William MacRae, with DCI John Lomond working a list that is being written through writers themselves. The line arrives as dialogue rather than as an epigraph, and that is worth knowing. Crime fiction tends to hand its characters working rules instead of slogans, because they have to get up and do the job whether or not it suits them. Written into a novel about a detective grinding through a case, the sentence reads as an observation about the work rather than about self-improvement.

Why it holds today

Most of what people quit is quit on the day it stopped feeling good. The project is tedious, the run is cold, the page will not come, and the absence of appetite is mistaken for a reason. The line removes that by naming feeling as the wrong instrument: it was never asked to measure anything.

It also lowers the bar in the right direction. Discipline does not require enthusiasm on demand, only the willingness to begin without it. What a person manages on the days that feel like nothing is what the rest of it is eventually built from.
